Steven Universe | Stronger Than You | Cartoon Network

When placing the series on the honor list of the 2015 Tiptree Award, which recognizes works of science fiction or fantasy that explore and expand gender roles, the jury wrote: "In the context of children's television, this show deals with gender in a much more open and mature way than is typical for the genre, and has some of the best writing of any cartoon ... In addition to showing men and women who do not necessarily conform to standard American gender ideals, the show also gives us an agender/non-binary character and a thoughtful exploration of growing up".[188]

The series' reputation as "one of the most unabashedly queer shows on TV"[205] generated controversy in 2016 when Cartoon Network UK removed an embrace between Rose and Pearl but did not remove a kiss between Rose and Greg from its British broadcast.[206] The network, which said the decision was intended to make the episode "more comfortable for local kids and their parents", was criticized as homophobic by fans and the media.[207][208] In 2017, the Kenya Film Classification Board banned Steven Universe and other cartoon series from being broadcast for "glorifying homosexual behavior".[209]

One of the great things about Steven is he's often not fighting to simply defeat his antagonist. He's trying to understand their pain, help them through it and win them over in the process. As the opponents and their pain grow through the series, so Steven has to grow to help them. It's what makes his character arc so fascinating. He is constantly changing and reacting to the needs of those around him. You will not meet a kinder, more gentle cartoon soul than Steven Universe.

As in Adventure Time, Steven Universe is a cartoon that isn't really meant for younger kids, thanks to some mild sexual innuendo and general crudity, among other snags. Its bizarre premise and throwback animation style may appeal to tweens looking for something that's off the beaten cartoon path, though, and they will be able to see past the characters' flaws to recognize their positive traits better than younger kids would. 041b061a72
